We’re a church, which means we believe some things.

One of our main beliefs is that you don’t have to believe what we believe to come and join in with our community, to explore big questions about life, and meaning, and purpose.

But, we also know that having some idea what people in a community like ours believe is helpful before you check us out in person. So here are some of the big ticket items…

We believe in one God, who created the heavens and the earth.

We believe this God is triune — so, like Christians since the foundation of the church, we believe in God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit.

We believe we meet God by meeting Jesus, who the Bible calls “God’s word made flesh” and “the exact representation of his being” and “the image of the invisible God.” We believe we meet God in prayer and worship; that God is present in all places and times, that “in him we live, and breathe and have our being” and that God longs for us to reach out and find him. We believe that the best way to know what God is like is to see what Jesus is like.

We believe we meet Jesus in the Bible, as the Bible is lived, read, and taught in his church.

We believe that the Bible is God’s word and that it tells one story that is all about God as the creator and redeemer of the world, and that his act of redeeming and recreating the world centres on the life, death, resurrection, ascension and future return of Jesus. We believe this story is good news for all people. We believe that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, and that nobody comes to God except through him.

We believe that Jesus is king, and that we, the church, are invited to be part of his kingdom when we are saved by grace through faith. This salvation includes the forgiveness of sins through our union with Jesus by his Spirit, it includes our being made new — transformed into the image of Jesus, and it includes our adoption into the people of God (the church). As the church we believe we are called to live with Jesus as our Lord, as we participate in ‘the body of Christ’ (also the church).

We believe we are called to love the Lord our God with all our hearts, and to love our neighbours as we love ourselves. And to love our enemies.

City South Presbyterian Church is a Presbyterian Church of Queensland, so our pastor and elders are committed to the Westminster Confession of Faith read in the light of the Declaratory Statement. If you’ve got any questions about this stuff, feel free to ask our pastor, Nathan.

Most weeks our congregation is invited to participate in reciting the Nicene Creed, words that Christians have spoken together or affirmed for almost 1700 years.
